This political cartoon is about the
annexation of Hawaii. The cartoonist’s message is that the U.S. is taking
Hawaii away from other countries. Others might say that this cartoon portrays
the U.S. are being greedy. This cartoonist uses labeling by labeling the big
fork ready to eat, the “U.S.”The cartoonist also uses symbolism by having a
giant Uncle Sam with a gigantic fork about to puncture Hawaii. That scenario is
never going to actually happen, but it symbolizes America taking Hawaii away from
the other possible countries that could have owned it. This cartoon shows symbolism by having uncle Sam, who usually represents America, take a piece of land to expand his territory.
